Food is a major highlight here. The menu features well-prepared dishes like the Ox cheek and lamb rump, praised for their outstanding flavors and presentation. Desserts, especially the date pudding, receive frequent compliments for their delightful taste. Plus, the pub’s range of regional cask ales and ciders adds to the overall enjoyment, making it a must-visit for anyone looking for authentic local flavors.
While the overall reception at The Sun Hotel is positive, a few diners noted that the heavy focus on mashed potatoes could be overwhelming. Some dishes come with generous servings of this starch, which might not suit everyone's palate, especially if you're not a fan of them. This could be a point to consider when ordering mains.
Another occasional critique involves the availability of vegetarian options. Although there are solid selections, a couple of visitors expressed a desire for broader choices. This feedback is valuable as it highlights the balance between traditional pub fare and accommodating diverse dietary preferences.
Stopped while travelling through. So glad we did! Wonderful, friendly staff. The food was amazing. Could not fault a thing. Flavours and presentation! We ordered the Ox cheek and lamb rump as well as the date pudding and lemon for dessert. We will definitely go back to the area just to stop again. We had been out walking at waterfalls in the area all day so we were not really appreciately dressed or clean but they welcomed us in and served us like royalty. Just loved everything about this place. The atmosphere and decor included. Highly recommended.
Really nice food, if a little heavy on the mashed potato’s which seem to come with all our dishes. Reasonably priced (£78 for three people. Two starters. Three mains and a bottle of red. ) Staff are lovely.
Highly recommended if you are visiting Llansantffraid ym Mechain - or in the vicinity. We had a delicious meal, and were served by a young man and woman who couldn't have been more attentive and pleasant. The food and wine were excellent. The hotel / bar / restaurant appear to have been recently refurbished in a manner in keeping with the lovely building, sympathetically retaining many of its fascinating historic features in a spotlessly clean, comfortable, modern setting. We had an evening meal on a Friday and felt that the place deserved to be full! Clearly a lot of work has gone into making the restaurant attractive and inviting. We hope it flourishes! Splendid food, fine service in a very pleasant setting - and a reasonably priced menu. Do give it a visit; snooze and you lose!
Amazing pie of the week! We loved our meal at The Sun Hotel. There wasn’t a need to book and they allowed our puppy with us, as long as we ate in the bar. Very fair prices (especially for drinks!) and welcoming, down to earth staff. Made our first meal out on our holiday very special and memorable. Highly recommend. Thanks a million!
We came on spur of moment after living here 20 years ! The lady on the bar was extremely friendly and helpful and professional my hubby is Celiac and the choice of gluten free was good, our meal was extremely tasty and dog friendly too !
” I highly recommended The Sun Hotel. It has a brilliant cook. The customer service is excellent it has a very friendly relaxed atmosphere where everyone can find great tradishinal food and enjoy a fushion of modern & traditional design .
Stopped for lunch to break up the journey. Really friendly helpful landlord, pub is lovely and food is excellent, we had the barbecue chicken, perfectly cooked and loads of it. Overstayed by an hour! All very up to date including toilets. Would be a brilliant pub for functions, with local canal walks and the lime kiln park not too far away. Worth going out of your way to visit.
